Yesterday, I received an e-mail from WooThemes. The subject line reads “Important notice re: themes you’ve purchased”.
It starts quite all right with “We hope you’re enjoying the All Themes Package”.
The second paragraph is less than uplifting. It informs me that my theme package contains themes that have been retired. How do you mean? Enjoying the All Themes Package?
Until the day before yesterday, WooThemes offered 65 WordPress themes. Today that number has dropped to a mere 27. And that is including 6 child themes for the free Storefront theme!
Of course, I can understand when a theme author retires a theme, especially when it is not responsive. Adding responsiveness to an existing theme can be laborious.
But this 5th retirement since 2012 also affects the two premium themes released last year – Zephyr and Stitched.
And all child themes to the Canvas theme, while the Canvas theme used to be their flagship theme.
Are you a WooThemes customer? What are your thoughts on this? To me it is quite a shock.
At the end of the e-mail, WooThemes states that they will ll be focusing their efforts on Storefront, the free e-commerce theme.
My interpretation is that WooThemes will be retiring more themes in the cause of next year.
When you have purchased a theme that was retired yesterday, then you can use the coupon code mentioned in the e-mail to get 50% off any Storefront extension. Just extensions?
To put it to a test, I added Canvas to the cart, and tried to apply the coupon. Did not work. And it does not make a difference whether I am logged in or not. This more or less confirms my thoughts expressed above.
WooThemes will continue as a developer of plugins and extensions. Well, and the free Storefront theme, but that is actually just a vehicle to sell those plugins and extensions. WooThemes needs a new name. Something like WooCommerce.
From these 28 WooThemes, 19 remain active. Nine are freshly retired:
- WooThemes Appply
- WooThemes On Topic
- WooThemes PixelPress
- WooThemes Shelflife
- WooThemes Show Off
- WooThemes SMPL
- WooThemes Spectrum
- WooThemes Stitched
- WooThemes Zephyr
For a complete list, please visit Woo’s Retired Products page.
The fact that WooThemes has retired these themes does not mean that these themes will cease functioning. It means that WooThemes, will no longer update these themes. You are still entitled to six months of support regarding these 9 themes.
Take this time to explore alternatives to your current theme from Woo, and to implement a the theme. Just drop me a note when you need some advise.
