Magazine by Themify is a responsive theme for online magazine and news sites, featuring a Breaking News slider, several custom post types and a drag-and-drop content composer; the Themify Builder.
The theme supports natively three WordPress menus:
- Top Navigation – left aligned at the top of the page
- Main Navigation – left aligned next to the site-title/logo
- Footer Navigation – centered in the footer
Themify Magazine installs with nine custom widgets:
- Banners & Links
- Feature Posts
- List Categories
- List Pages
- Most Commented
- Recent Comments
- Social Links
The theme incorporates 13 widgetized areas:
- Sidebar Wide
- Sidebar Narrow
- Sidebar Wide 2A
- Sidebar Wide 2B
- Sidebar Wide 3
- Before Content
- After Content
- Footer Social
- three Footer columns
The primary sidebar is assembled from the Sidebar Wide (at the top), the Sidebar Wide 3 (at the bottom), and the two narrow Sidebar Wide 2A (left) and 2B (right) in between.
The Sidebar Narrow is the secondary sidebar and only visible in the three column layouts.
The Social widget is positioned in the top right corner of the page – opposite to the Top Navigation. The contents of the Header widget is displayed between the header and the Breaking News slider.
The Before Content widget is located between the Post Title and the Post Content, while the After Content widget is positioned between the Post Content and the Comments – next to the Related Posts.
The theme adds four modules to the WordPress menu for its custom post types: Highlights, Portfolios, Sliders, and Testimonials. Each comes with its own categories.
A Highlight post consists of text, usually with an image and a heading. You can use Highlights to display specialties, key services, and (product) features. You can enter the image dimensions, attach an external link as well as a lightbox link.
Portfolio posts let you showcase your projects. Portfolio post allow you to include a Featured Image. Furthermore, you can specify the image dimensions, hide post info and meta, and of course you are able to attach an external link as well as a lightbox link.
The Slider post type lets you create a text with the editor, upload an image and set its dimensions. Furthermore, you have the ability to attach an external URL, a Lightbox Link and a Video URL.
The Testimonial post type includes custom fields for the Featured Image, the Author Name, Title, Company, Position, and a URL.
Themify supplies its themes with a drag-and-drop content composer – the Themify Builder. This visual editor allows you to create content by dragging modules to a canvas. The Themify Builder offers the following modules: Accordion, Box, Callout, Divider, Gallery, Highlight, Image, Map, Menu, Portfolio, Post, Slider, Tab, Testimonial, Text, and Video.
The Themify Builder is available for pages and posts – including the custom post types. The article Drag & Drop Web Pages with the Themify Builder describes this visual content builder in more detail.
The Magazine Theme Options panel comprehends four tabs:
The options of the Settings tab are divided over:
- Default Layouts
- Theme Settings
- Image Script
- Social Links
- Themify Builder
- Twitter Settings
The General section allows you to upload your favicon, enter custom Header and Footer code, a custom URL for your RSS Feed, as well import a Google Webfonts Subset.
With Default Layouts you have the ability to select your default post layout, which can be either one, two, three or even four columns, and set your preference for the location of your sidebar or sidebars – or have no sidebar at all.
In addition, you can enter the dimensions for the thumbnails as displayed on index pages and single post pages, and hide post details.
The Theme Settings let you select your preferred Gallery Lightbox, disable the fixed (main) navigation, select your post category for the Breaking News slider, and activate Related Posts and Social Share.
Here you can also exclude the RSS Link and Search Form from the page headers, customize the footer text, and set your desired number of Footer columns. For the latter you can opt from zero to four widget areas.
At the Image Script tab you can select your preferred method of image resizing; with Themify’s image script or according to WordPress Featured image settings. With the image script you have also the ability to tweak the way images are cropped.
The Social Links allow you to add and modify the title, link, and image of your social network profiles. You can add as many social profiles as you like and display these in the Social widget area – or one of the other widget areas – with the Social Links widget.
The Themify Builder options let you disable the visual content editor completely or just specific modules.
At the Twitter Settings you get the chance to enter the keys of your Twitter Account for the Twitter widget.
At the Styling tab you can personalize the body, header wrap, body (middle) wrap and the footer wrap. You can select your preferred background image or color, fonts and colors for theme elements like titles, body text, headings and navigation.
The Skins tab is the place where you select you desired color scheme. You can choose from seven predefined color schemes. You can further personalize the default settings of a specific skin at the Styling tab. Another option is to create a new skin – from scratch or based upon an existing one. Your custom skin will appear on the skins page as an additional theme style.
The Transfer tab facilitates the import and export of your theme settings, which you can deploy for back-up purposes or in order to transfer the theme settings to another web server.
