Backstreet by WPGalaxy is a responsive theme for blogs and online magazines. The theme is available from Envato’s ThemeForest.

ThemeForest Backstreet lets you manage three menu locations:

  • Top Navigation – left aligned at the top of the page
  • Main Navigation – right aligned in the header
  • Bottom Navigation – right aligned in the footer

This ThemeForest theme incorporates six widgetized areas:

  • Sidebar
  • Magazine
  • four Footers

The sidebar can be located to the left or to the right side of the content area.

The Magazine area is in fact a widgetized home page activated when the theme is used in magazine style. You can populate this area with a slider, the carousel, and the one and two column widgets.

Backstreet offers you a choice out of eight homepage layouts. In blog and magazine styles, as well as with or without a slider – and when you opt for a slider, you can choose from a 2/3 (content wide), or a full slider.

The Theme Options Panel comprehends ten vertical tabs:

  • General
  • Top Ads
  • Social Networks
  • Header
  • Spotlight
  • Featured Sliders
  • Posts
  • Appearances
  • Background
  • Error404

At the General options, you select your preferred homepage, and page style – with a sidebar or full width.

When you enable the Top Ad, it will appear between the Top Navigation and the page header.

The Social Network page servers 12 input fields for URLs to your social profiles, and one for Feedburner.

With the options at the Header, you control the visibility of the menu, date and time, social icons, and search form in the header.

The Spotlight settings let you enable or disable the ticker tape directly below the header. You can replace the default Spotlight, and enter the desired number of recent posts the ticker tape should include.

Details like the type of slider (big or small), direction, speed, and transition time are set at the Featured Slider options. Disabling the slider entirely is also an possible.

The Posts tab allows you to customize the social networks to be included in the social sharing buttons, as well as which author and comment details should be displayed or hidden.

The default color scheme is a combination of black, white and reds. At the Appearance tab, you can choose between a dark and a light theme style. In addition, you can replace the reds and black by any color of your preference with a color picker.

This is also where you can select your preferred fonts for body text, headings, and navigation.

At the Background tab, you can choose from 20 background patterns, and set the desired color for the background and optionally upload a custom background image.

Last but not least, at the Error 404 settings, you are able to customize the title, text and image in case a URL entered leads to a page not found.

The Backstreet theme support the following Tumblr-like post formats:

  • Standard
  • Gallery
  • Audio
  • Video

The Featured Image is supported, meaning that the Featured Image will show up on index pages, as well as on single post pages. For each individual post you have the ability to hide the Featured Image from being displayed.

Backstreet extends posts with custom fields for a custom sidebar, background image, the comment type and whether or not you want to display the featured image. Regarding the comment type, you can choose form Default, or Facebook.

The custom fields for the custom sidebar and the background image are also available for pages.

ThemeForest Backstreet extends the admin menu with panels for its custom post types Gallery, Portfolio, and Reviews. The latter two allow you to organize post with their own categories.

The integrated rating system is only available for the custom post type Reviews. The author can rate an item up to five different criteria plus an overall score (0, 0.5, 1, 1.5 up to 5). You do not need to enter all six scores, it possible to enter only a value for the overall score. User ratings are not supported.

I purchased this theme early 2012, and the author has been updating and upgrading the theme ever since. The version reviewed here is 3.3, which was released September 21, 2015.
